MIFARE DESFire EV3 Opens Up New Business Models for Smart City Services
MIFARE desfire ev3 is the latest evolution of NXP’s proven contactless MIFARE portfolio and delivers next-generation performance, advanced security and seamless integration of mobile services. It has a longer operating distance and faster transaction speed compared to its predecessors and comes with extensive new functions including a Card Generated MAC and a Transaction Timer feature to mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks.
Enhanced Performance
The MIFARE DESFire EV3 IC is the next evolution of NXP’s proven contactless MIFARE product portfolio and offers advanced security, seamless integration of mobile services and enhanced performance that opens up new business models for Smart City services. The new IC is backward compatible and delivers a greater operating distance and transaction speed compared to previous generations.
The IC is Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified and offers a secure crypto engine with an extensive choice of open crypto algorithms. A card generated MAC and a transaction timer help to mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks and protect privacy. The EV3 is ideal for secure multi-application schemes in public transport, access management or closed-loop e-payment applications.
HID’s EV3 credentials implement the full capability of this new IC including AES128 encryption, a secure channel for protecting card data from man-in-the-middle attack and random UID to ensure that cards can never be linked to specific individuals. These credentials can be used with existing readers based on MIFARE DESFire EV1 and EV2 products as well as HID’s own iCLASS SE and multiCLASS SE reader families.
The EV3 is also fully interoperable with NFC phones and other NFC-enabled devices in NDEF mode. In addition, HID’s EV3 credentials offer layered security features like authentication signatures, key diversification and the Secure Identity Object (SIO) data model for added protection of privacy and user credentials.
Enhanced Security
The mifare desfire ev3 IC offers increased security by default with an extensive set of built-in features including a unique identifier, cryptographic algorithms, a transaction timer, and a secure channel. This enables users to mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks and ensures the integrity of data.
The high level of security makes mifare desfire ev3 cards ideal for applications such as public transport schemes, smart card supplier access control, and e-payment. The chip is based on global open standards for both air interface and cryptographic methods, and it is fully compliant to all 4 levels of ISO/IEC 14443A.
In addition, HID’s credentials based on the mifare desfire ev3 offer a comprehensive migration path from vulnerable legacy, 125 kHz proximity technology. They provide a seamless, cost-effective transition to high frequency MIFARE smartcard technology that is compatible with a wide range of readers including HID Signo, iCLASS SE and multiCLASS SE readers.
Gallagher MIFARE DESFire EV3 cards are programmable, printable and punchable. They are manufactured from black PA6 industrial grade plastic in an ISO format and can be attached to a key ring or lanyard, placed into a contactless reader or used in a smartphone case. These cards are Common Criteria EAL5+ (Evaluation Assurance Level 5+) certified and fully comply with the NFC Forum Type 4 Tag IC specification. These cards can be printed using any direct-to-card or retransfer printers.
Seamless Integration of Mobile Services
With urbanization increasing, people are looking for smart city services that allow them to ride the bus, pay parking, access an office or school, make a payment or earn loyalty points without having to carry around multiple cards. mifare desfire ev3 is a secure chip designed to bring more convenience and connectivity to essential smart city services.
The third generation of NXP’s mature non-contact MIFARE DESFire product portfolio, this IC is backward compatible and offers enhanced performance for increased operating distances and higher transaction speed, along with improved security. It supports a new Secure Unique NFC message (SUN), which provides an unclonable way to protect data confidentiality and integrity by storing a unique NDEF message in the IC on each tap.
This message is verified in a secure hardware crypto engine, which protects against spoofing, man-in-the-middle attacks and other threats. The IC also offers a stronger encryption mechanism to safeguard credentials against data breaches, while the Secure Identity Object data model adds key diversification, authentication signatures and other advanced security features.
The mifare DESFire EV3 IC is widely used in applications such as access management, closed-loop micro payment and student ID. It is fully compatible with DESFire readers including HID’s iCLASS SE, multiCLASS SE and iCLASS SDU series and offers the same reliability and system design as MIFARE DESFire EV2. mifare DESFire ev3 enables a smooth upgrade to MIFARE DESFire EV2 and can be mifare desfire ev3 used in the same form factor, making it easy for public transportation systems, access control solutions providers and other businesses to adopt new technologies and improve existing ones.
Multi-Technology Cards
Designed to support new business models, DESFire EV3 offers more ways for a single card to deliver multiple services. The increased number of read/write cycles and enhanced security features make this chip a great choice for many applications including smart ticketing and closed-loop e-payment schemes. When combined with NXP’s MIsmartApp cloud service, a single card can be used for Smart City services like public transport, car or bike sharing, citizen services, access to city attractions and more.
The mifare DESFire EV3 chip offers a high level of security with a 3DES or AES hardware encryption engine for the confidentiality and integrity of transmission data. This enables it to be used for the most demanding applications in both physical and logical access control, loyalty and micro payment solutions.
Dual technology cards using mifare DESFire and iCLASS Prox credentials offer a seamless migration path to smarter technologies that provide better security and performance. With a mix of both 125 kHz and NFC readers, this option allows you to upgrade your system at a pace that works best for your facility and budget.
mifare DESFire enables more secure transactions with improved anti-tear capabilities, configurable ATS information for card personalization and a range of advanced security features like a Card Generated MAC (CGMAC), a Transaction Timer function and Secure Unique NFC Messaging (SUN Message). The IC is Common Criteria EAL 5+ certified and supports a wide choice of open crypto algorithms.
